I'm not sure how many check out this site still, but I'm not doing free monograms anymore. However there will be new tutorials to come soon. All of them free and possibly some new free downloadable templates. The rest of 2015 and 2016 should be very interesting. Please check back soon for more details.
Thanks and Happy Planning. BriannaNicholehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02586355738160439090noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7949007057753545480.post-63255361908643523462012-12-03T21:50:00.000-08:002015-10-18T17:37:45.266-07:00Family Logos and Free MonogramsGreetings from here in monogram land. I know what you are all thinking, two posts in two days Brianna you must be crazy. Well you might be right. My computer has sucked me and I am practically unable to pry myself away from playing in photoshop. I blame it on the crappy weather we have been having. It is not supposed to rain this many days in a row in California. It is feeling particularly Pacific Northwestish around here.

So I have been thinking a lot about family logos or family monograms. It could be that my hubby and I may have just had the kid talk and it has put me into the family mood. Whatever it was it has gotten me to thinking about the family logo. Back in the day my grandparents had some drinking glasses etched with what they called our coat of arms. Now I'm not really sure that this is anything official but it was always really nice to drink out of. As I kid I always felt special to have the family cup.

I don't think that many families would go this route. I doubt most people know what their coat of arms are, what the various symbols mean or even how to go about getting them. Not to mention they can look a little antiquated.

So this got me thinking about the family logo or family monogram. This to me is a great way to add some personality to your life. Just like an engaged couple wants to proudly display their names/initials together to symbolize their lives coming together in marriage, so too can you display your families names together. There are lots of different ways to use your family logo/family monogram. You could create return address labels, holiday cards, wall decals, letterhead, scrap-booking pages, etc. Heck I have even seen some people create family cards with their monograms. The sky is the limit.

I'm working on some tutorials and other creative ways you might use these monograms. For now I will leave you with an example:
Hopefully you are all getting back into the swing of things after the Thanksgiving holiday. I think I may have gained about 10 lbs over the last few days.

I have been feverishly working on your free monograms, so more are coming very soon. I have also been planning more tutorials.

The one people ask most about it the follow up to http://weddingmonograms.blogspot.com/2008/02/get-this-look-part-i-invitation.html. In this tutorial I showed how you could create an invitation or gave you the option to download my template and customize it. I even have it sized for use with a 5x7 pocketfold. So I have decided to finally create the follow up tutorial for the other inserts that go with the invitation. This should be coming soon.

In the mean time you can still request free monograms.

There are so many ways to do it depending on the type of font you use and your initials. The twine monogram, as I like to call it, is two initials that wrap around one another. You get the 'wrap around' effect by erasing part of one letter. This tutorial can be used in most of the latter versions of Photoshop, including CS versions.

Here is my final product:

Step 1 Start by opening photoshop. Create a new canvas by hitting Ctrl + N on your keyboard, or going to File > New. I like to make the canvas big, here are my settings:

Step 2 Highlight the background layer, and then use the paint bucket tool to fill the layer with white.

Tip: I find it best to use two to three colors for the Twine Monogram. The initials need to be different colors so you get the effect of the letters wrapping around one another.

Step 3 Create a new layer using the New Layer icon.

Step 4 Select two fonts; one cursive and one block. If you need some help with finding fonts visit my <a href="http://danandbrianna.com/bio_bio/font%20bio.html" target=_"blank">font bio. I am going to use Sloop-ScriptTwo and Rutaban as my fonts.

Note Not all fonts work with all initials. You may find that you love how a B looks like in Arial, but you may hate it for a D. The best way is to play around with fonts until you get ones that you like for your initials.

Step 5 Select Layer 2, the top layer, and select the type tool.

Step 6 Type in your first letter. Create a new layer, by using the New Layer Icon. Type in your second letter on the new layer. Use move tool to place the second letter on top of the first letter.

Step 7 Right click each layer with the letters and select Rastersize Type. This will make the layer an image and allow us to erase a section.

Tip: Make sure you are not right clicking on the thumbnail of the layer or you will not get the Rastersize option.

Step 8 Ctrl + Click On the thumbnail of the layer second from the top and highlight the top layer. You will see the marching ants on the bottom letter.

Tip: To make the image appear bigger Ctrl + + sign. This will make it easier to see what needs to be erased.

Step 9 Select the Eraser tool and begin erasing sections of the top layer. I like to eraser every other section to see what looks best. In celebration of Breaking Dawn I thought we might do another monogram tutorial
today. While my monogram really has nothing to do with Twilight I thought the names would be a nice little nod to the
ending of the franchise.

Today's monogram is perfect for lots of wedding stationary. This design is made with a dingbat font called Separates. Here
is the look that we are going for:

Step 1: Download and install the Separate font. You can get it Here. If you need help installing the font, check
out my step by step tutorial Here.

Step 2: Open Photoshop and create a new canvas. Feel free to play around with the size of your canvas.
Here are the settings I used.

Step 3: Select the Paintbucket tool, set the foreground color to white and click once
on your canvas.

Note: You can always use a different background depending on the color of your stationary.

Step 4: In the layers pallet select the Add Layer button.

Step 5: Select the Type tool and set the font to Separates . I set the
font size to 48, but you may need to change this depending on the size canvas you used.

Step 6: Type an S with the Seperates. Select the Move tool and move
the image to the top middle of the canvas.

Step 7: Hit Ctrl + J to duplicate the S (design) layer. Go to
Edit > Transform > Roatate 180.

Step 9: Use the down arrow on your keyboard to move the upside down design.

Step 10: In the layers pallet select the first S layer. Using the Rectangle Marquee
tool; select the space shown in the screen shot below. This will be used to close our monogram.

Step 11: Hit Ctrl + C to select the design. In the layers pallet
select the Add Layer button. With the new layer selected Hit Ctrl + V to paste the selection into the new layer.

Step 12: Go to Edit > Transform > Rotate 180 to rotate the new layer. Use the Move tool to move the line and close up the one side of the rectangle.

Step 13: Hit Ctrl + J to duplicate the layer. Go to
Edit > Transform > Roatate 180, and then Use Move
tool to move the line and close up the other side of the rectangle. Now your rectangle should be closed like in the screen
shot below.

Step 14: Create a new layer and select your Text tool to add you and your finance's names and your wedding date. I used Bell for the names and Bicham Fancy Script for the date. You can be create here and really add anything that you like.
You think hey I want to add some sort of design or flourish to spruce it up, but you don't know where to start. Well my friend you have come to the right place.

Earlier today I got an email from one of my former brides, who I created some monograms for. She was looking for some ways to replicate a few monograms I had created in the past. Unfortunately for her the images that I created were doctored by me so there isn't an easy way to create the exact design. However luckily for her, and all you lovely ladies out there, the Internet has so many similar designs that you are sure to find something close to what you want.

The two main ways I recommend adding designs to your monogram, invitation, table numbers, rsvp cards, seating chart, menu etc. is by using either Dingbats or Photoshop Brushes.

I happen to have some how to's on these very topics.

It's not a problem, there are still lots of monogram options; You can have a monogram with just your first names/initals and forgoe the whole last name thing, or you could create a monograms that includes both of your last names. I say go for the second option. It still shows that you are blending your lifes together, but it lets you display your last name.

In this blog entry I am going to show you a couple of monogram choices for ladies that want to keep their last name...and display it proudly on their monogram.

Here are some that I have already created:

You can pretty much do this with any monogram. Not only have I not been blogging, I have not been answering my email! I know I have just not gotten back to anyone. If it makes you all feel better I have not be blogging much on my personal blog either. Since I have been so bad at getting back to emails I thought I would answer some emails I received on my blog so others might benefit from it too. Here goes:

Email From Sarah
How would I create embellished / ornate fonts and flourish designs.

I know you cannot see the images she attached so I will explain them. She is looking for an ornate letter as the back of her monogram.

BriannaNichole
The best, and easiest, way to have an ornate design is to use a dingbat or a font. Learn more about <a href="http://weddingmonograms.blogspot.com/2008/02/tropical-dingbats.html" target=_"blank">Dingbats. One of my favorite dingbat sites is <a href="http://houseoflime.com/" target=_"blank">Houseoflime.com.
Here is one that I created using the <a href="http://houseoflime.com/fonts/ornB.htm" target=_"blank">Ornate Initials B font.

I simply added a box to make it a little fancier. You can find similar instructions on my <a href="http://weddingmonograms.blogspot.com/2008/03/create-border.html" target=_"blank">How to Create a Border tutorial.

Email From Ashley
So first off, I LOVE your site! You are soo freaking creative! OMG I have been on photoshop for hours playing with my monogram! I have a few questions though because I'm having some problems. My colors are Red and White. So its been hard to do monograms with it cause they are boring, I have tried incorporation black and grey and like a beige but Im having alot of difficulty. Does it have to match my color theme or can you think of some other colors I can throw in with red? Ugh its super aggravating. Also our names are Ashley & Matthew soon to be last name Donovan. These are such hard letters to work together! Exceptionally the D!Im trying but Im not having much luck. My wedding is 05/30/09 si I still have time, but Im getting pretty frustrated. Is there any way you could help me come up with a good idea? Thanks.

BriannaNichole
First off I have to say thanks so much for the compliment on the site. You will have to thank my old boss who let me make monogram tutorials when I should have been working ;).

To answer your question I think that there are a lot of colors that you can do with red and white. I love the idea of doing back and grey with some red for an accent. It just screams chic and modern to me. I don't think you have to 100% match your color scheme. If you add punches of other colors no one would even know. In fact you could do invitations and STDs that are a totally different color pallet than your wedding. No one would be the wiser. Another great way to work with a 'boring' color pallet is to go monochromatic. Why not use several shades of the same color.

I do agree that some letters are harder to work with than others! My monogram consisted of B, D and another D for the last name. I could not pick harder letters to work with than those. What I figured out was that by adding a different type of font (cursive swirly vs. modern serif) you can overcome those difficult font issues.

By using a serif, or plain, font for the D I was able to get around the fact that it is hard to find a good 'fancy font' D.

That is all of the emails for this time. I hope you found this helpful. I am going to really try to make an effort to post lots more monogram tutorial annnnnnnnnd to answer my emails.

Happy Planning,
BriannaNichole!BriannaNicholehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02586355738160439090noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7949007057753545480.post-74481303879566030322008-06-08T21:17:00.000-07:002008-06-08T21:18:00.818-07:00I swear I will Post Soon!I will, I will, I will!

BriannaNichole!BriannaNicholehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02586355738160439090noreply@blogger.com4
